New ANSI standard for insulating links
Only a matter of a few weeks after the new federal law was published which had the requirement for insulating links to be approved to a national standard, which at that stage did not exist, UL/ANSI have established a national standard UL2737. Insulatus are now waiting for a NRTL to be able to start testing to the new standard.
US Department of Labor's OSHA publishes final rule on cranes & derricks in construction
WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration today announced that it is issuing a new rule addressing the use of cranes and derricks in construction, which will replace a decades-old standard. Approximately 267,000 construction, crane rental and crane certification establishments employing about 4.8 million workers will be affected by the rule published today.
The new rule is designed to prevent the leading causes of fatalities, including electrocution, crushed-by/struck-by hazards during assembly/disassembly, collapse and overturn. It also sets requirements for ground conditions and crane operator assessment. In addition, the rule addresses tower crane hazards, addresses the use of synthetic slings for assembly/disassembly work, and clarifies the scope of the regulation by providing both a functional description and a list of examples for the equipment that is covered.

First in Crane Safety
On June 30th 2009 North Carolina was the first state in the USA to ratify new state crane safety law based on the CDAC proposed Federal rulemaking. The new law, 13 NCAC 07F. 0900, becomes effective 1st October 2009.
The new law gives focus to training, certification, inspection, fall protection, assembly and course power line protection. Power line safety is an important element, the new law requires when working within a defined distance of an energized power line an Insulating link must be fitted between the load and the lifting line. Furthermore, the Insulating link is required to be approved by a ‘Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory’ in order to comply with the new legislation.
UL Listing
The Load Insulator is the first insulating link to be listed by UL, (United Laboratories). The Load Insulator was succesfully tested to the UL standard ELRK. The standard is extremely demanding and ensures that products meeting the standard are reliable and safe to operate in the most hazardous of operational conditions.
